Everything you need to know about becoming a barber

How do you become a barber?

While it’s nice to think that anyone can be a barber, it’s imperative that you learn proper haircutting and shaving skills and techniques before practicing.

Normally, aspiring barbers complete a college or other training program, or a two or three year apprenticeship program. This is combined with on-the-job training. While several years of experience can replace formal education, it’s often a longer and more difficult path to take. We recommend formal training for the skills and safety of both you and your clients.

Who can become a barber?

The best barbers enjoy socializing, networking, and have a creative spirit to create new and unique looks for their clients.

The best barbers have the skills to create any look a client asks for, while respecting their time and advising what will best suit their face shape and lifestyle.

An aspiring barber should have a passion for hair and want to help make people feel their best. When people feel good about themselves they have the confidence to excel, and you can make that happen for them.

Being a good barber really comes down to two things: talent, and confidence. At Cosmic College we can teach you the skills to develop your talents that will lead you to the confidence you need to become a good barber.

The Course

Every day barbers work with dangerous tools and harmful chemicals. Barbers know what precautions to take to keep themselves and their clients safe.
Proper sanitation of tools and the surrounding areas help reduce the risk of infections or spread of diseases.

Proper practice with daily tools is also necessary as scissors, razors and trimmers can cause nicks and cuts both to you and your clients.

As a barber, you will give people the confidence to be themselves while looking their best. The best barbers do this in a safe, clean, and secure environment.

How much money can a barber make?

On average, most hair services cost between $60- $400. Income varies greatly based on how much you charge and how many hours you work. As you develop your talents, education and clientele base, you will be able to charge more and work more hours if you choose. Because of this, you can expect quite a range in annual income:

2 clients per week – $6,000 – $40,000
4 clients per week – $12,000 – $80,000
8 clients per week – $24,000 – $160,000

Your income is also dependent on whether you work for yourself or for someone else. Barbers have so many job options that you can tailor your career to what best suits you, your time, your lifestyle and your skills.

Really, the money and the clientele are there for you to make what you desire in the time that you desire the way that you desire. All you need to do is take that first step.
